Dynamics NAV (formerly Navision Software A/S - History

Navision Software A/S was a leading ERP solution for medium sized businesses and enjoyed a buoyant time in the UK market. In July 2002 Microsoft bought Navision Software A/S and this joined Microsoft’s Great Plains acquisition to form the Microsoft Business Solutions division. In September 2005 Microsoft rebranded the product and released it as Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0.

We joined the “Navision market” in 1997. Our experience covers all aspects (life-cycle) of the software; pre-sales, consultancy, development, implementation, upgrading installations and support. We have worked on a wide variety of solutions including standard base “out-of-box” systems (accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, inventory), heavily bespoke retail system that replicates data from stores to head office and a bespoke Microsoft Office integration system to name a few.

As Dynamics NAV develops, so will the need to keep abreast of the changes in software and platform. Microsoft’s plan is to ‘phase out’ the native Navision database. The alternative which Navision introduced before being taken over by Microsoft, was a SQL server back-end database. It is clear that Microsoft will continue to use SQL server as the database solution for Dynamics NAV and this will provide many opportunities for our consultants to provide a valuable service to companies like yourself. The upgrading to a SQL server platform from a native Navision database is a time consuming and in depth process which is best handled by experienced people. We have handled many upgrades in our 10 years experience. Also even if you are currently utilising this SQL server option, as the software wasn’t initially designed for SQL server, there are a number of performance tuning aspects to consider with the software.
